Breakthrough T1D UK
Youth Ambassador
(Formally JDRF)

My Type 1 Diabetes journey started unexpectedly. My dad was diagnosed in 2013, and in 2022, just three weeks after my COVID-19 vaccination, I was diagnosed too. I didn’t have all the typical symptoms, but my mum thought I had a UTI, so we went to Macclesfield Hospital. The doctor agreed it was likely a UTI and prescribed antibiotics, but my mum, knowing my dad’s diabetes, asked if there was glucose in my urine. The doctor confirmed there was but reassured us it could be normal for a UTI.

Still unsure, we checked my blood sugar at home with my dad’s monitor. It was dangerously high, and I was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)—a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body lacks insulin. Thankfully, my mum's awareness saved me from a much worse outcome.

This experience drives my passion for raising awareness as a JDRF Youth Ambassador. Since COVID-19, Type 1 Diabetes diagnoses in children and teens have surged, making it more important than ever to recognise the '4 Ts': Tiredness, Thirst, Toilet (frequent urination), and Thinner (weight loss). Early detection truly saves lives.

Your donations to Breakthrough T1D are vital in funding research, advocacy, and improving the lives of those living with Type 1 Diabetes. With your support, we’re advancing treatments, shaping policies, and moving closer to a cure.

A heartfelt thanks to the Wythenshawe Hospital Diabetes Team and Starlight Children's Ward for saving my life.
